All About Highland Cows

Whenever I'm searching for creative inspiration, I often look back through old journals and photo albums of family trips and adventures. Recently, I came across some of my photographs from Scotland, and I was reminded of its beautiful misty moors, rocky shores, and verdant highlands. There was one photograph, however, which really warmed my heart: a newborn highland cow snuggled up to the flank of its mother as they stood among the purple heather on a hill. Highland cows are truly one-of-a-kind: their unique coloration and beautifully-textured coats make them a striking symbol of the rugged beauty of the great outdoors. In this article, I wanted to share a little bit more about the Highland cow (we even have some in Pennsylvania!) and showcase some of my new jewelry that was inspired by the his beautiful creature.

About the Highland Cow

The Highland cow, also known as the Scottish Highland or affectionately as "the Highland coo" in the Scots language, is a hardy breed of cattle that has been around for centuries. They are well-known for their thick and shaggy ochre coats that are perfect for protecting them from harsh weather conditions. Their long hair also gives them a distinctive look, making them a popular attraction for tourists visiting the Scottish Highlands. These cows are also known for their gentle temperament, making them easy to handle and a joy to be around.

In addition to being appreciated for their cute and cuddly appearance, Highland cows are also used as livestock for both milk and meat. Their milk is high in butterfat and protein, making it an ideal ingredient for producing high-quality dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, and butter. Overall, the Highland cow is a unique and versatile breed of cattle that has earned its place in both the farming industry and the hearts of animal lovers worldwide.

Add some rugged beauty to your jewelry collection.

Finding Highland Cows in Scotland

Highland cows can be found throughout Scotland, but they are most commonly associated with the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles. There are many farms and estates in these areas that specialize in breeding and raising Highland cattle. These farms often offer tours and opportunities for visitors to see the cows up close and learn more about their history and characteristics.

In addition, Highland cows can often be spotted grazing in the fields and hillsides throughout the region. They are an integral part of the Scottish landscape and have become a beloved symbol of Scotland's rural heritage. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor to Scotland, there are plenty of opportunities to see these iconic cows in their natural habitat.

Pennsylvania's Highland Cows

Highland cows can also be found in Pennsylvania, but they are not as common as in Scotland. There are a few farms scattered throughout the state that specialize in breeding and raising Highland cattle, but they are often located in rural areas. The Pittsburgher Highland Farm, situated near Pittsburgh, and Sheppard Farms on Apple Hill, located in York county, both offer comprehensive tours of their Highland cattle operations for anyone who would like to see Highland cows up close and in person.

The hardy nature of Highland cattle makes them well-suited to Pennsylvania's colder winters and variable weather conditions. While they may not have the same cultural significance in Pennsylvania as they do in Scotland, Highland cows are still a unique and interesting breed that can be appreciated by farmers and animal lovers alike.
