The Hummingbird Collection

The Hummingbird Collection

I absolutely love hummingbirds! They are such fascinating creatures with their tiny size and incredible speed. I enjoy watching them dart around my backyard, flitting from flower to flower with their wings beating so fast that they're just a blur. To pay homage to these graceful, elegant birds, I have designed a line of hummingbird-inspired keepsakes that capture their magical essence. In this article, learn a bit more hummingbirds and see how I have incorporated them into my newest designs.

About My HUmmingbird Jewelry

As warmer weather begins to return to our region, I find myself eagerly awaiting the return of hummingbirds to my garden. Each year, their playful, colorful presence brings me such happiness and sparks my creativity in both the jewelry studio and in my garden. Forever inspired by the hummingbird, I have created several jewelry pieces that celebrate the unique beauty of these magnificent creatures. When designing my keepsakes, I experimented with different materials and shapes to best evoke the grace and lightness of hummingbirds in flight. In some of my designs, I stuck exclusively to metal, delivering a smooth, sleek version of the hummingbird's essence. In other pieces, I incorporated colorful turquoise embellishments to enhance the visual impact of the hummingbird's delicate features. It is my hope that these original pieces will bring as much joy to their wearers as hummingbirds bring to my backyard! Here is a bit more about my collection:

  • Each piece offers an elegant, lightweight hummingbird design.

  • Eco-friendly alloys and striking silver finishes feature prominently in this collection.

  • Delicate accents provide stunning details for each keepsake.

  • This collection features a variety of earrings and necklaces that capture the hummingbird's grace.

  • Stainless steel necklace chains are durable and accentuate the beauty of every design.

All About Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are some of the most unique and intriguing birds in the world. They are known for their incredible speed and agility, and their ability to hover in place thanks to their rapid wing beats that can exceed 80 times per second. These tiny birds are found exclusively in the Americas, from Alaska all the way down to Tierra del Fuego, and they come in a variety of colors and sizes, with some species weighing less than a penny. Their long, thin bills are perfectly adapted for reaching nectar deep inside flowers, which is their primary source of food. But hummingbirds also eat insects and spiders, making them important pollinators and natural pest controllers. Their beauty and charm have captivated humans for centuries, and they continue to inspire and amaze us with their fascinating behavior and incredible adaptability.

Hummingbirds of Pennsylvania

Seeing a flash of color moving at what feels like lightning speed through my garden always stops me in my tracks! I stand completely still, hoping to catch a glimpse of a ruby-throated hummingbird or a rufous hummingbird, the two species that visit our region. It's always such a thrill to see these tiny birds flitting around my flowers, their iridescent feathers shining in the sunlight. The ruby-throated hummingbirds have bright green feathers and a distinctive red throat patch on the males, while the rufous hummingbirds have rusty-orange feathers and a more aggressive demeanor -- this species is less common in our area, however. I love watching hummingbirds hover in place as they drink nectar from my feeder, their wings beating so fast that they're just a blur. I feel so lucky to have these little visitors in my garden, and I always make sure to keep my feeder filled with fresh nectar so they'll keep coming back. Seeing them brings such magic and wonder to my day, and I'm grateful for their presence in my life.

Your next nature-inspired keepsake is hovering in plain view.

The Ecological Importance of Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are small but mighty creatures that play a vital role in Pennsylvania's ecosystem. As pollinators, they are responsible for transferring pollen between flowers, which leads to the production of fruits and seeds that other animals rely on for food. Additionally, hummingbirds are important for controlling insect populations, as they feed on small insects like aphids and spiders.

The hummingbird's high metabolism also means that it requires a constant supply of nectar, which encourages the growth and reproduction of plants that provide food and shelter for other wildlife. Without hummingbirds, the ecosystem in Pennsylvania would suffer from a decline in plant and animal populations, making the hummingbird's presence critical to maintaining the health and balance of the environment.

How to Attract HUmmingbirds to your garden

If you want to attract hummingbirds to your garden, there are several things you can do to make your outdoor space a more inviting habitat for them. By following the tips below, you can create a hummingbird-friendly garden that will attract these beautiful and important creatures to your backyard:

  • Plant native flowers that are rich in nectar, such as bee balm, cardinal flower, and trumpet creeper. These plants provide a source of food for hummingbirds and are more likely to attract them than non-native species.

  • Provide a hummingbird feeder with a sugar-water solution. Make sure to clean and refill the feeder regularly to prevent mold and bacteria growth.

  • Create a water source, such as a birdbath or fountain, for hummingbirds to drink and bathe in.

  • Add perches, such as small branches or wires, near the nectar sources for hummingbirds to rest on between feedings.

  • Avoid using pesticides or herbicides in your garden, as these can be harmful to hummingbirds and other wildlife.

  • Consider planting trees and shrubs that provide shelter and nesting sites for hummingbirds.
